Innovative ways to deliver more recreational opportunities in growing areas (where space is constrained) is critical.

At this webinar, Abinaya Rajavelu from Cred Consulting and Stephen Alderton from Willoughby City Council discussed Willoughby City’s Public Spaces and Recreation Strategy, and accompanying Placemaking Planning Toolkit, and explored how they are maximising existing public spaces, co-designed with their diverse communities.

Urban areas face challenges when it comes to providing substantial new open spaces for recreation and culture. As land becomes increasingly constrained, creatively using the spaces we already have is more important than ever. During this webinar we’ll share how Council has embraced a placemaking ethos and already piloted several temporary, successful projects – some of which the community has requested become permanent. We also discussed upcoming initiatives in the pipeline and share key learnings on what has worked and what wasn’t so successful and why.

This session offered practical guidance on how this approach can be adopted by councils across Australia to unlock the full potential of public spaces, making them responsive to evolving community needs and interests, and how to co-design these projects with communities.
