Co-designing a process of deliberative engagement in south Sydney

Sutherland Shire Council

Cronulla Town Centre Public Domain Plan - Community Reference Group

The Cronulla Town Centre is a unique and iconic location, strongly valued by both the local community and visitors to the area. It has significant historic, recreation and community value.

Cred delivered the community engagement for Gallagher Studio, co-designing a process of deliberative engagement with a Community Reference Group including residents, businesses, and Councillors, to inform the Cronulla Town Centre Public Domain Master Plan, which will enhance Council’s assets and develop new opportunities for use through well considered and targeted design interventions.

How we did it

We used visual and interactive tools, to capture feedback from the hard to reach through street stalls and intercept surveys in busy sites and at busy times.

Over 600 internal and external stakeholders participated in engagement activities, including a workshop with Sutherland Shire High School Students and at street stalls held in the Cronulla mall.

Cred provided strategic advice to design five deliberative sessions and facilitated each monthly workshop. This resulted in a successful outcome, with a number of actions endorsed.

The Outcome

The Community Reference Group was established to ensure the perspectives of community stakeholders informed the Stage 2 Detailed Concept Development of plans.

The engagement report includes quantitative and qualitative outcomes, showing clear outcomes to formulate the final Masterplan.

Our engagement process, integrated with the design process, built trust between Council, stakeholders and the broader community, to reduce potential conflict, and allow for a clear consensus-based vision to be developed for the town centre.
