Being and feeling socially connected is essential to healthy, happy and resilient communities. While overall Australia has comparatively higher levels of social cohesion there are signs that trust in government is declining, our sense of belonging in our communities depends on where and how you live (and who you are), and not everyone has access to the social assets they need for health and wellbeing.
Over the past few years, CRED has surveyed more than 4,000 people (in partnership with our colleagues Micromex). CRED has pulled this into a new CREDucation publication: How socially connected are we? And why we should care.
Drawing on research across NSW, Queensland and Victoria, our CREDucation report uncovers:
- How much we trust each other and our governments
- Who feels like they belong and who doesn’t
- How age, housing, language and dwelling type shape our experiences
- How safe and supported we feel in our neighbourhoods
- Where connection is strengthening and where it’s slipping
- What physical and social infrastructure communities value most
